Creams, balms, serums, massage oils: CBD enters cosmetics with its own rules. Far from a gimmick, what skin can — and cannot — expect from a still-young formulation ingredient.
How does CBD act topically?
The skin has its own cutaneous endocannabinoid system — CB1 and CB2 receptors in keratinocytes, sebocytes, hair follicles and cutaneous nerves. Applied locally, CBD interacts with these receptors without significantly entering systemic circulation. The action is local, surface, targeted — not systemic.
Formulations you'll encounter
- Balm / cerate
- Thick texture, rich in waxes (beeswax, candelilla), for dry or friction-prone areas.
- Cream
- Classic water-oil emulsion, lighter, for daily face or body use.
- Dry oil
- Selected oil macerate (hemp, jojoba, argan), fast absorption, satin finish.
- Serum
- Higher active concentration, targeted application, short gestures.
- Massage oil
- Intermediate texture, soft fragrance, formulated to glide.
Reading a CBD cosmetic label
Three things to find:
- CBD concentration — in mg for a given content (e.g. 250 mg per 50 mL = 0.5%).
- CBD form — full spectrum, broad spectrum, or isolate. In cosmetics, broad spectrum and isolate are most common (stability, no cannabis odour).
- Origin and certification — Cosmos / Ecocert if organic, batch traceability, COA available.
What not to expect
No therapeutic claim: a CBD cosmetic does not treat eczema, psoriasis, acne, or chronic pain. If a brand implies otherwise, be wary. What you may observe topically is skin comfort: hydrated feel, perceived suppleness, less tightness after an exposed day. That's it — and it's honourable enough.
How to integrate into your routine
- Face — after cleansing and toning, as serum or cream. 2-3 drops of a CBD serum, smoothed from centre out. Evening priority (overnight regeneration).
- Hands and feet — rich balm, thin layer, after shower. Gesture matters: 30 s palmar massage activates microcirculation.
- Tense zone — massage oil, slow movements, medium pressure. Minimum 5 min for the gesture to register.
- Lips — targeted CBD balm, after a gentle scrub.
Precautions
- Skin patch test — apply a small amount behind the ear 24 h before first use, check for any reaction.
- Wounds and mucosa — avoid injured areas or mucosa unless specifically formulated.
- Pregnancy / breastfeeding — topical CBD use not recommended without medical advice.
- Storage — away from light and heat, reseal after each use. Best-before generally 6-12 months after opening.
Our advice
Start with a single product — a universal balm or a dry oil — and observe 3 weeks before expanding. The only way to judge whether CBD adds something to your skin, without confusing it with a neighbouring active.
