Pet CBD is now a full shelf in specialised retailers. It is also a field where the worst advice circulates. This article restates a few firm points, because rough approximations can harm here.
The absolute rule: dedicated veterinary products
You never give a CBD product made for humans to a dog or a cat. Reasons:
- Essential oils in some human flowers and balms are toxic to animals, cats in particular.
- Human dosages are totally unsuited to animal weight.
- Some excipients (flavours, sweeteners like xylitol) are dangerous, even lethal, to dogs.
If you consider CBD for a pet, you need a product explicitly formulated for its species, and a vet's opinion.
Why the vet is non-negotiable
An animal cannot tell you where it hurts. Wanting to "calm" an anxious dog or an aging cat without a diagnosis can mask a problem that required real veterinary care. Veterinary CBD, when it has a place, has it alongside follow-up, not instead of it.
What we know, what we do not
Veterinary CBD research is progressing, especially in dogs. We have publications on tolerance and pharmacokinetics, but we are far from any consumer indication consensus. French vet practice remains cautious, and rightly so.
Which animals?
- Dog — most studied, oral oil drops weight-adjusted.
- Cat — trickier, different metabolism, many essential oils to avoid; vet mandatory.
- Horses, exotics — specialist territory, no improvising.
The Horus stance
Our shops in Boulogne-sur-Gesse and L'Isle-en-Dodon will not sell you a human CBD flower telling you "try it on your dog". We will redirect you to a vet and serious veterinary brands. Less salesy, more honest.
To go further: CBG, the mother cannabinoid.
CBD is not a medicine, for humans or for animals. Never give a human product to an animal. For any pet-health question, consult a veterinarian.
