CBD and older adults: precautions, suitable formats and the GP's place

CBD draws interest from some older adults. The terrain requires more caution, due to ongoing treatments. An honest overview.

CBD and older adults: precautions, suitable formats and the GP's place

Seniors are interested in CBD — fairly so. They are also the audience that requires the most caution, because they take the most daily medication. This article does not give medical advice; it sets an honest frame.

The absolutely central point: drug interactions

CBD is metabolised in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes that also metabolise many common drugs: anticoagulants, antiepileptics, some antidepressants, statins. Practical consequences:

  • Before any CBD use in a treated person, talk to the GP.
  • Do not stop, lower or double a medication because of CBD.
  • Ask whether blood-test follow-up (INR for anticoagulants) should be tightened.

The simplest formats for seniors

  • Infusion with crumbled flower in full milk or rich plant cream.
  • Low-dose sublingual oil, French-law-compliant and supplied with a certificate of analysis.
  • Topical balm for a gentle shoulder or forearm massage gesture.

Be wary of senior-targeted promises

Some campaigns target pain, sleep, anxiety in older adults. Such messages are most often illegal and always problematic. CBD is not a medicine. For chronic pain, sleep trouble or anxiety in an older relative, the right contact is a doctor, not a retailer.

The Horus stance

In our shops in Boulogne-sur-Gesse and L'Isle-en-Dodon, when a son or daughter comes in for a parent we ask: "is he or she on daily medication?" and "have you discussed it with the GP?". If the second answer is no, we suggest waiting.

To go further: CBN of the evening.

CBD is not a medicine. CBD can interact with many treatments (anticoagulants, antiepileptics, antidepressants, statins, among others). Before any use in a treated person, the GP must be consulted.
